QFAS

The first QFAS Great Treasure Hunt was run Saturday April 21st and it turned out to be an awesome day out.

Our appreciation goes out to the sponsors who opened their doors to the participants:
AGE OF AQUARIUMS at Browns Plains,
PET CITY at Mt Gravatt,
REDLANDS PET CENTRE at Capalaba,
FISHCHICK’S AQUARIUM at Annerley,
RED DEVIL AQUARIUM at Caboolture,
SMITH’S AQUARIUM at Boondal,
ATLAS AQUARIUM at Wavell Heights,
CITY FARMERS at Mitchelton.

A huge thank-you to Graeme Day for organising and coordinating and thanks to all the QFAS volunteers.

56 people made the trip, including club regulars and some new faces. It was great to see everyone there and the dinner/awards ceremony/general frivolity turned out to be a great social event in its own right.

$98.00 was raised to go towards the Australian Team for the Kickbike World Championships to be held here in Brisbane in 2016.

21 APRIL 2013 – SUNSHINE COAST (UPDATES)

Date: Sunday 21 April 2013

Meeting Location: The Shell Service Station (Coles Express and Hungry Jacks) – Exit 171 Johnston Road Exit, Bruce Highway on the Sunshine Coast. Just north of the Tibrogargan Creek crossing. Meet at the North Bound station as there is one on both sides of highway (Google map). In case your running late or coming from north coast you can meet us at the first fishing locations as it is pretty easy to find.

Departure Time: 8.30am. This is the time we will leave.
If you wish to have breakfast there, please arrive before the departure time as we won’t be waiting. Please ensure you have enough fuel before we leave.

Destination:  We will fish the Sunshine Coast around the Maroochydore region.

Two locations have been selected .

Location 1: lower Martins Creek (9:00 – 10:30)
• Access the site via the Service Rd that runs alongside Maroochydore Rd.
• Turn at the intersection of Maroochydore Rd and Pike St at the Matilda Service station
• Travel to end of the service road to the soccer fields, park there.
• Access creek alongside Maroochydore Rd or further downstream along stream bank

Location 2: South Maroochy River (Downstream of Wappa Falls) (11:00 to 1pm)
• Return to Maroochydore Rd, then onto Bruce Highway
• Exit Highway at Yandina-Coolum Rd after crossing South Maroochy Rr, then into Fleming St and straight ahead onto Old Gympie Rd
• Turn left at Colemans Rd and follow down to creek.
• Parking is limited to about 5 cars at the crossing so you might need to find safe park along side of road before or after the creek and walk the short distance to creek crossing. Lots of shade for buckets and gear.

Our targets include:

Rhadinocentrus ornatus (Ornate Rainbowfish),
M. duboulayi (Crimson Spotted Rainbowfish),
Craterocephalus sp. (Hardyheads),
Pseudomugil signifer (Pacific Blue-eye),
• Plus the usual range of gudgeons and invertebrates.

If we’re lucky we may also come across some Ambassis agassizii (Glassfish), riffle shrimp and the odd Nannoperca oxleyana (Oxleyan Pygmy Perch).
Pygmy Perch are protected so we can’t keep them.

See this post on the ANGFA Forums for some lovely pictures of the area: http://forums.angfa.org.au/viewtopic.php?t=1643

The expected finishing time is 1.00pm.

Lunch: Finishing with a BYO picnic/BBQ in the shady surrounds of Wappa Dam 5 min from site.

Bring: wading boots, dip nets, folding bait traps, bait or burley for the traps, buckets (with lids), a field tank for photography, an esky or styrofoam box to hold the fish in, plastic bags for the fish, rubber bands, non- iodised salt (cooking salt, rock salt, etc), drinking water, sunscreen and insect repellent (expect sand flies), fish and plant identification books, and water test kits if you have them (hardness, total hardness, pH, dissolved oxygen, salinity, etc).

Remember: We are a conservation society and an important part of each field trip is to survey and record the water conditions and what we find. We are not there to rape and pillage. Take only as much as you need to display or breed. It is illegal to sell fish from the wild without a permit.
Size and bag limits and equipment regulations apply when fishing in fresh water in QLD.

2013 is a special year for ANGFA Qld. We’ve come a long way since our founding members first decided to meet as regional group under the newly formed national association back in 1983. There’s been thirty years of volunteer efforts and commitment to the club; thirty years of building partnerships with and gaining the respect of other clubs, community groups, and government agencies; thirty years of promoting the hobby and the appreciation of Sahul’s magnificent fish and aquatic life; and most of all, thirty years of new friends and old mates sharing stories, experience and when all else fails, a good laugh.

This year we’re providing open access to our monthly publication, In-Stream. In-Stream is edited by internationally recognized author, rainbowfish expert, and founding member Adrian Tappin. We also have a brand new website thanks to the technical expertise of Alan Rubin, and our esteemed president Steve Baines has been putting the finishing touches on a mobile display that gives us the opportunity share our interests with the broader community.

Keep an eye out this year for some great speakers, field trips, and special events that we’ve got in the pipeline. Don’t forget 2013 is a convention year as well and it sounds like ANGFA Victoria has made great plans for us (checkout the invitation from ANGFA Victoria).

If you’re not a member you’re welcome to have a look around and if you like what you see then maybe you’d like to join us – send an email to the membership officer for more information or use our online application form.

ANGFA Qld meets at the Bar Jai Community Hall at 7:30pm on the second Friday of even numbered months – check out our calendar for dates and times. At the meetings we have invited speakers giving presentations, a drinks stand and a shop with books, dry goods and equipment. There’s even an auction held each meeting where members sell their extra plants and fish – often one’s you won’t see anywhere else and at a fraction of the price. It’s always great to see new faces if you can make it along.

Don’t forget to check back here for updates to the site and for our monthly instalments of In-Stream.
